2011 Lexus IS
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Can you wipe lost or stolen keys from my 2011 Lexus IS so they can't start the car anymore?

Yes, and it's part of the all-keys-lost process. When the smart key ECU gets reset, every previously registered fob gets erased from memory. Only the keys you authorize during that session get written back in. A lost fob, a stolen fob, a fob from an old owner: none of them will start the car or respond to the door handles after the reset is complete.

Q: Does my 2011 Lexus IS smart key have a hidden emergency blade inside it?

It does. There's a small release tab on the fob body. Press it, slide the blade out, and you have a mechanical key that fits the driver door cylinder. It won't start the car on its own, but it gets you inside when the fob battery is dead or the push-to-start system isn't detecting the key.

Q: My 2011 IS starts fine but one door handle stopped doing the touch-unlock thing. Is my smart key failing?

Almost certainly not the key. If the start button still recognizes the fob and other handles still respond, the key itself is doing its job. Touch unlock on this system works through sensors built into each door handle. When one handle stops responding while others work normally, the issue is almost always isolated to that handle's sensor or the wiring behind it.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2011 Lexus IS. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2011 IS smart key system requires professional diagnostic equipment to register a new fob. There is no ignition-turn sequence or button combo that works on this vehicle. The fob you bought is just hardware until someone with the right tools pairs it to your car's security system. The good news: if you already have one working key, adding the new fob is a shorter job than an all-keys-lost reset.

2011 Lexus IS Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was out near the Kit Carson Park Area on a Tuesday, parked next to an urgent care clinic, when a woman walked up to my van before I even knocked on her window.

She had already looked up my California BSIS license number before she called. The reason: her previous locksmith left her with a receipt that had no company name, no license number, and a phone number that stopped working within a week. She found out later the guy had no license at all. So when she needed a spare smart key for her 2011 Lexus IS, she did her homework first.

She asked me straight out if she could verify my credentials on the spot. I told her yes, the BSIS lookup is public, and my van has the company name on the side for a reason. She nodded and said that was the whole reason she called me.

The job itself was clean. One working key already on hand, so no reset needed. Connected through the diagnostic port, registered the new fob, walked every door handle for touch unlock, tested the start button, confirmed both keys were live. Cut the emergency insert blade to match her lock profile, tested that too. Total time on-car was under 40 minutes.

She got a real receipt with a real license number and a real phone number that will still work next year. That part should be standard. For a lot of people, apparently it isn't.

Lexus IS Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the least painful way to deal with all-keys-lost on a 2011 Lexus IS?▼

Call a mobile locksmith who works Lexus before you even think about the dealer or a tow truck. Dealer pricing on all-keys-lost for this generation is not gentle, and that quote usually doesn't include getting the car to them in the first place. For the 2011 IS, the all-keys-lost process involves resetting the smart key ECU, which has a timed initialization sequence you can't skip. After the reset, new fobs get registered and the emergency insert blade gets cut.
