My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes. The 2003 IS uses a traditional ignition cylinder, so a broken key in there is a extraction job, not a replacement-first job. I remove the broken piece without pulling the cylinder apart if I can help it. Once it's out, I pull the key code from your door lock or vehicle records and cut a fresh blade from that code so you're starting clean, not inheriting wear from the old one. The chip in the old key is gone with the broken piece, so you'll need a full replacement remote head key programmed to your vehicle. That's all handled on site.

What exactly is a remote head key and why does my 2003 Lexus IS use one?

A remote head key is a single unit that combines the physical key blade, the transponder chip, and the remote buttons all in one housing. The transponder chip talks to the immobilizer every time you turn the key. If the vehicle doesn't get a valid signal from that chip, the engine won't run, even if the blade turns freely.

The 2003 IS came with this setup from the factory, using three buttons for lock, unlock, and trunk. When the housing cracks or the key gets damaged, the chip inside might still be functional, but a compromised key body is a breakdown waiting to happen. A full replacement is the right call, not tape and hope.

My Lexus is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I do first?

Start with the battery. The CR1616 in these remote head keys can lose enough charge to cause intermittent issues before it fully dies. Swap it with a fresh name-brand cell and retest.

If the remote still isn't being read, try this: hold the fob body directly against the ignition cylinder and turn. The immobilizer can read the transponder chip at close range even without battery power, similar to how an RFID tag works passively. If the car starts that way, your chip is intact and the problem is the battery or the remote circuitry, not the key's ability to authorize the start.

If holding it close to the cylinder still gets you nothing, that points to either a failed transponder chip or a reception issue on the vehicle side. That's when you call me out.

I bought a replacement remote head key online. Can I program it myself or do I need a tech?

You need a tech. The 2003 Lexus IS does not have an onboard self-programming sequence for the transponder side of the remote head key. The immobilizer registration requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port. There's no ignition-turn sequence or button trick that registers a new transponder chip on this system.

The remote buttons are a separate matter. Some owners have had luck with an onboard sequence for the RF remote function alone, but that only gives you lock and unlock. The transponder that actually lets the engine run still needs to be registered with tools.

If you've already bought the key, hang onto it. Bring the vehicle and the uncut key and I can cut the blade and program the whole unit on site.

How long does it take and what's the process if I've lost my only key?

All-keys-lost on the 2003 IS is one of the cleaner jobs in the Lexus lineup. No proximity system, no push-button start module to deal with. I connect to the OBD port, access the immobilizer, clear the old key data, and register the new remote head key. The blade gets cut to your vehicle either by pulling the key code or by decoding the lock directly.

Start to finish, plan on 30 to 45 minutes on site. I bring proof-of-ownership verification with me as part of the process, so have your registration and ID ready. Once it's done, I test the start, the remote functions, and the trunk before I consider the job closed.
