Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2022 Lexus IS Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was somewhere near the Spring Valley border, wrapping up another job, when the call came in. Guy in an underground parking structure in Lemon Grove. Only fob. Gone. He had checked his pockets three times, walked the stairwell, hit the elevator floor twice. Nothing. He was alone, it was late, and the structure had that particular kind of quiet that makes a lost key feel worse than it is.

He did not have his registration in his wallet. He did not have his VIN off the top of his head. He was ready to call a tow just to get the IS somewhere with lights and security cameras, which would have made a bad night into a very expensive one.

I kept him on the phone. Told him to look at the base of the windshield from outside the driver's door. He found the VIN inside two minutes. Then I told him to open his insurance app. The registration image was right there.

That VIN told me everything before I loaded the van. I knew the key type, prepped the correct fob, confirmed the battery, and had my diagnostic equipment ready for the all-keys-lost sequence. When I pulled into the structure, he was standing by the IS looking a lot calmer than when he called.

I did the work under the garage lights. Programmed the new fob, tested all four buttons, walked the door handles, confirmed the start button was reading the key. The IS started clean. He drove home that night.

He mentioned the dealer at some point, mostly as a thought experiment since they were closed. When I told him what we charged versus what he would have faced between towing and a dealer appointment the next morning, he just nodded. That was the whole conversation about it.
