2006 Lexus IS Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in De Luz, off one of those long private roads where the houses sit back from everything, a guy called me about a 2006 Lexus IS that would crank and immediately die. He'd already had another locksmith out. Paid full price. The other guy told him the smart ECU was bad and left.
I drove out and sat with it for a few minutes before touching anything. Engine cranks, fires, stalls in under two seconds. That pattern is almost always a registration that didn't commit, not a failed module. The hardware on these doesn't usually fail that way.
I connected at the OBD port and pulled the registration data. The previous key write was incomplete. The security sequence on this system includes a timed calculation window, and it had been rushed. The key existed in the system but not in a state the vehicle would honor past that initial crank.
I cleared the bad registration, ran the full sequence correctly, let the timer do what it needed to do, and confirmed the write was permanent before I disconnected anything. Then started the car three times in a row to be sure. Clean every time.
The guy watched the whole thing from his front steps. When I showed him the confirmation on my screen he just nodded slowly and said "so it was done wrong the first time." Yeah. That was the whole story.
He paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted him, and he'd already burned money on the first locksmith. I don't bring that up to make him feel worse. I just make sure the job is actually finished before I pack up and drive back down the hill.
