The 2006 IS uses a smart key system, so there's no blade going into the ignition cylinder for starting. But the fob does have an emergency insert blade for the door lock, and that one can snap if it's forced or if the door lock hasn't been used in a while. If that blade breaks off in your door lock, I can extract it on site without pulling the lock apart. From there I decode the lock, confirm the cut, and get you a new blade that fits correctly. The fob itself and its programming are a separate matter handled at the OBD port.

When the fob is damaged or the internal components fail, the vehicle won't recognize it as valid regardless of whether you press the buttons. A cracked housing might look cosmetic but can shift the internal board enough to cause read failures. Full replacement and fresh registration through diagnostic equipment is the right call, not a repair attempt on a compromised fob.

My Lexus is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I do first?

Hold the fob flat against the start button and press. The vehicle can power the transponder through proximity contact even when the fob battery is completely dead, so this workaround is built into the system. If the car starts that way, you just need a fresh CR1632. Get a name-brand cell, seat it flush, and make sure the contact clips aren't bent from a previous swap.

If holding the fob directly to the button still gets nothing, the problem is either the fob itself or the vehicle's receiver. On these, the smart key receiver module can develop faults that look exactly like a dead fob. Before assuming the key is bad, it's worth having someone with diagnostic access check whether the module is responding at all. I've seen owners replace a perfectly good fob because nobody checked the other side of the equation.

I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself to my 2006 IS?
