1999 Toyota Sienna Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guy was parked in the Home Depot lot near Cardiff-by-the-Sea on his lunch break, convinced his 1999 Sienna had to go to the dealer for a replacement key. He had read a forum post from years back that said Toyota was the only option. The dealer's website did nothing to change his mind.
He had one working key left. He wanted a spare before he ended up stranded.
I met him in the lot. The 1999 Sienna uses a turn-key ignition with a transponder chip inside the key head -- no remote, no buttons, nothing to pair over the air. The job was cut a new key blade to match his lock and then register the transponder chip to his van's immobilizer through the OBD port under the dash.
I did both on site. Cut the blade, verified it turned smooth, then ran the programming sequence. The van saw the new chip and accepted it. He turned it over and it held -- no stall, no warning, just a running engine in a parking lot.
He tested the original and the new one back and forth a couple of times. Both worked. He had a backup for the first time in years.
The dealer wanted an appointment the following week and would have charged a good chunk more for the same outcome. His van never left the parking spot.
