2001 Toyota Sienna
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2001 Toyota Sienna Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A parent over in Fernbrook had a problem with timing more than anything else. She was at the school lot for a conference, had a pickup across town at 3pm, and her key had stopped starting the van.

It would turn in the ignition just fine, but the engine would crank, fire for a second, and then immediately stall. Classic immobilizer behavior on this generation. The chip in the key either lost its registration or the antenna ring around the ignition column had a read failure. Either way, the van was not going anywhere on its own.

She had already called the dealer. They quoted her a wait of several days and told her she would need a tow since the van would not stay running. That was not going to work with a 3pm pickup on the calendar.

I drove out to the lot, pulled up alongside the Sienna, and got to work. On a 2001 like this, the immobilizer system is older and the programming process does not need server handshakes or factory credentials. I ran the key programming sequence through my tool at the OBD port, registered the replacement transponder key to the van's immobilizer, and verified the chip read was clean at the antenna ring. The engine started and held. No stall.

She left the lot with time to spare. The dealer comparison came up, but honestly it was almost beside the point. The bigger thing was that she did not lose her whole afternoon over a key.
