2017 Toyota Sienna
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2017 Toyota Sienna Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

It was around 5:30 in the morning when the call came in from a parking lot off the main supply strip in Alpine, out near Peutz Valley. A worker on an early farm shift. His 2017 Sienna had gone dead on him overnight and the crew was already loading up. He needed to be moving in less than 30 minutes.

I was pulling into that lot before 6.

The fob wasn't responding at all. No lock, no unlock, nothing. The push-button start was sitting there ignoring him like he wasn't even holding the key. I popped the fob open right on the hood of the van. The CR2032 inside wasn't dead-dead, it was reading low, the kind of low where the fob looks broken but isn't. I swapped the cell, cleaned the contacts, and seated it right.

Then came the part that actually mattered. The van still wouldn't recognize the fob after the battery swap, which told me it had dropped out of the vehicle's memory, probably from a combination of a dying cell and however the door got locked. Connected through the OBD port, ran the registration sequence, and walked every function: door handles, start button, lock, unlock, the sliding door buttons.

Total time on site was about 25 minutes. He made his shift.

He asked at the end what the dealer would have done. Honestly, they'd have had him tow the van in, wait for a tech opening, and spend the better part of a day getting a new fob ordered and programmed. Mobile changes that whole equation, especially when the job is a battery and a re-pair, not a full replacement.
