2003 Acura RSX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a transponder key and why can't I just copy it at a hardware store?

The 2003 RSX uses a transponder key, which means the key blade cuts the lock and turns the ignition like any metal key, but there's also a chip inside the plastic head. When you turn the key, the immobilizer reads that chip. If it doesn't recognize it, the car cranks and then shuts down. A hardware store copy is just a metal blade.

Q: What equipment do you use to program a key for a 2003 RSX?

Professional-grade diagnostic and programming tools. The 2003 RSX immobilizer isn't a pushover. It requires equipment that can communicate with the vehicle's security system through the OBD port and write a new key into memory. Generic tools that work fine on simpler vehicles often don't have the Honda/Acura coverage to handle this correctly. I've seen forum posts from RSX owners who called around and found locksmiths who showed up without the right setup and left them stranded anyway.

Q: My 2003 RSX cranks but immediately dies. Could it be the key?

Yes, and that's actually the classic sign the immobilizer isn't recognizing the key. Cranks fine, fires briefly, shuts off. The engine will turn over because the key mechanically works, but if the chip isn't reading correctly, the system cuts fuel or ignition almost immediately after start. This can happen with a damaged key, a key where the chip has failed from being dropped or exposed to water, or a copied key that was never properly programmed.

Q: I have one working key. Should I get a spare made now or wait until I need it?

Make the spare now. All-keys-lost on a 2003 RSX is a harder, longer job than adding a second key while you still have a working one. With a working key present, programming a spare goes faster and the process is more direct. Lose the only key and the job gets more involved. One key is a bad position to be in, especially on a vehicle this age where the plastic head can crack or the blade can wear.

2003 Acura RSX Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out near La Conchita, a woman called me about her 2003 RSX. Her dog was in the back seat. August. The car was off, windows cracked, and she was standing in a vet clinic parking lot watching him pant.

Her key had snapped. Not the blade, the head, right where the plastic meets the metal. The blade portion was still in her hand but the chip housing was cracked and she wasn't sure the key would even read anymore. She'd already called the dealer. Earliest appointment was the following afternoon.

I was twenty minutes out. First thing I did when I got there was get the door open and get the dog into the shade while she held him. Then I got to work on the RSX.

The key blade gave me the cut information I needed. I got a proper replacement blank, cut it to match her vehicle, and programmed the transponder to her car's immobilizer. Tested it in the ignition, confirmed it started and idled clean.

Forty-four minutes from her call to her engine running. The dealer wanted her to wait until the next day and pay considerably more. The dog was fine. She didn't have to leave an animal in a parking lot overnight while she figured out a plan.

Acura RSX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

A few things to watch for specifically when calling about an Acura or Honda key. If they won't give you a real estimate over the phone for your specific year and model, that's a problem. Any legitimate locksmith who works on these vehicles knows what the job involves before they show up. If they quote a $19 service call and say they'll sort out the price on site, that's a bait-and-switch.
