I was out near Mussel Shoals on a Tuesday when I got a call from a tire shop owner on the Ventura side. A customer had brought in a 2005 RSX and a previous locksmith had attempted to cut and program a replacement key. The tool lost connection mid-sequence, the security system threw a fault, and the car would not start. The first locksmith had left. The customer was still in the waiting room.
The shop owner had no idea what to do with it and called me as a second opinion.
When I got there, the first thing I noticed was the battery voltage was sitting low. That alone was enough to explain the failed handshake during the original attempt. A power interruption during the programming sequence on these cars can push the immobilizer into a fault state that just refuses to cooperate until you clear it properly.
I put my jump pack on it to hold stable voltage, then cleared the fault through the OBD port before doing anything else. Clean slate. From there I ran a fresh programming sequence with a properly cut transponder key matched to the vehicle.
It registered on the first try. Car started like nothing had happened.
The whole job ran about an hour and fifteen minutes, which is longer than a normal RSX key call. The extra time was all recovery work from the first attempt. The customer had already been quoted a flatbed tow and a multi-day dealer visit. They saved a significant amount by not going that route, and they got the car back the same afternoon instead of waiting days.
I always carry backup power for exactly this reason. Voltage issues during programming are one of the most common ways a straightforward key job turns into a headache, and it's almost always preventable.
