2006 Acura RSX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a transponder key and why can't I just copy it at a hardware store?

The 2006 RSX key has a small chip sealed inside the plastic head of the key. When you turn the ignition, the immobilizer reads that chip. If it does not see the right signal, the engine will not run, even if the blade is cut perfectly. A hardware store copy gets the blade right and the chip wrong, or skips the chip entirely. You end up with a key that turns in the ignition but the car goes nowhere.

Q: What equipment do you use to program Acura keys?

Professional-grade automotive diagnostic tools that cover the Honda and Acura line, along with the right Lishi pick for this keyway. Not the generic key machines you find at a big-box store, and not outdated equipment that guesses at the immobilizer protocol. The 2006 RSX has a specific transponder communication setup that requires a tool actually designed for it.

Q: I have my original key but I want a spare cut. Can you add a second key while the car is still working fine?

Yes, and honestly this is the smarter time to do it. Adding a key while you still have a working one in hand is faster and less expensive than all-keys-lost. The process still requires transponder programming, the new key has to be registered to your car just like the original was, but having a working key on hand speeds the job up. A lot of RSX owners skip the spare until something goes wrong and then they are stuck.

Q: My 2006 RSX starts and then immediately stalls, or cranks but will not fire at all. Is this a key or immobilizer problem?

Could be. On this generation, when the immobilizer does not recognize the transponder chip, the engine typically cranks but does not start, or in some cases fires briefly and cuts out right away. The dashboard will usually show a key-not-detected warning or a security indicator that stays lit after cranking.

2006 Acura RSX Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A plumbing contractor called me at 6:30 in the morning from a construction supply yard in North Ventura. He had a crew waiting at a job site, his RSX would not start, and his guys were already on the clock.

I was rolling by 6:05. At the yard in about 25 minutes.

He still had one working key, which made this faster. I used a Lishi pick on the door to confirm the cut, then decoded the blade so I could originate a new key. Got into the car, connected through the OBD port, and ran the transponder registration to add the new key to the system alongside his original. The blade got cut on site. Total hands-on time from the moment I pulled up was just under 25 minutes.

He was on the road to the job site before 7:15. His crew never knew anything happened.

The dealer would have meant a tow, a service appointment, and a good chunk of his morning gone. He texted me later that afternoon. Short message. Something like "lifesaver, thanks." That is the whole story.

Acura RSX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

If they will not quote your vehicle over the phone, walk away. Anyone who works on Acuras knows the 2006 RSX takes a transponder key, no remote, and can price it on the spot. A $19 or $29 service call with the price sorted out on site is bait and switch. Skip anyone who calls programming pass or fail, because with the right equipment it is not a coin flip.
