A guy on Upper State Street flagged me down near one of the wine bars on a Tuesday afternoon. He had a 2010 Q7 and one key. That one key had a broken flip hinge, held together with a rubber band. The blade still worked, barely, but he was terrified of snapping it inside the ignition barrel.

Cut a new blade to spec, transferred the transponder internals into a fresh housing, programmed the fob to the vehicle's security system on site, and tested every button plus a full start cycle. He went from a rubber-banded key on the verge of snapping to a solid working replacement in about 45 minutes, parked right there on the street. He mentioned the dealer quote exactly once, almost as a joke, and then went back inside.
