A guy in Santa Barbara, over by Santa Barbara Harbor, had just picked up a used 2013 Q7 from a friend of a friend. One key. Seller told him a spare would be cheap. Then he called the Audi dealer.
That conversation ended fast. He had just put money down on the car, paid insurance, and now the dealer wanted him to order a key by VIN, wait for it to ship, then schedule a programming appointment that could stretch days. He had just started his first real job. The timing was bad.
He found me online and asked if that was normal. I told him it was. Audi dealers charge what Audi dealers charge.
I met him at the gym lot before his workout. His Q7 ran the standard 4L setup: IYZ3314 flip key, HU66 blade, Megamos Crypto 48 chip on the immobilizer side. I used a VVDI2 to read the existing key's ID48 transponder data and clone it onto a fresh blank. The VVDI2 pulls the crypto value from a working key and writes an identical copy so the immobilizer on the J518 steering column module accepts it without a full security reset. Cut the HU66 blade, tested the remote, confirmed all three buttons.
He drove off with two working keys before his warmup. That second key also means if he ever loses one, the next replacement is a simple add-a-key instead of an all-keys-lost procedure, which saves a good chunk.
