A guy in the Samarkand neighborhood of Santa Barbara had just picked up a used 2013 Audi Q7. Good shape, fair deal, one key. The seller mentioned off-hand that getting a spare cut would be no big thing.
He called the Audi dealer first. The number they gave him was not what he was expecting. He had just started a new job, had rent, had the car payment, and that dealer quote was sitting on top of all of it. He went looking for another option and found me.
We met in the lot off the gym he goes to, right there in Samarkand. He had his one working flip key and the Q7 sitting under some shade. I asked him to hold onto the original while I worked from it.
The 2013 Q7 flip key has the transponder chip seated inside the fob body, behind the blade pivot. I used my equipment to read what was in his key and write a matched copy to a fresh blank, then cut the blade to the vehicle. Both keys, tested at the door and at the ignition.
He was inside doing his workout before I was even packed up. He mentioned the dealer figure again on his way in, more out of disbelief than anything else. I told him Audi dealers charge what they charge. He saved a good chunk coming to me instead, and now he has a backup key so if he ever loses one, it's a simple add-a-key job rather than starting from scratch with all-keys-lost pricing.
