2018 Genesis G80 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Port Hueneme, J Street Corridor. Mid-morning, already warm, and a guy is standing next to his 2018 G80 looking at his phone like the answer might be in there somewhere.
He'd bought the car used and it came with one key. That one key had been his only key for over a year, which is fine until the day it isn't. He'd been reading forums the night before, found a thread where someone said their dealer took two days and the service advisor acted like replacing a smart key was a moon mission. He wanted to know if that was normal.
It's not normal. It's just how some dealers handle anything that involves the key system -- schedule it, order the part, bring it back, wait.
I pulled the PIN for his VIN, connected at the OBD port, and ran the initialization. The G80's immobilizer has a timed sequence after you enter the PIN; you can't rush it. Once that finished, I presented the new fob to the start button, got confirmation, and ran every button to verify. Lock, unlock, the remaining two. Then the emergency blade -- cut to the vehicle, tested in the door, tested in the ignition cylinder. Everything working before I closed my kit.
He'd been bracing for the dealer quote he'd gotten over the phone. When I told him what I charge, he said he almost didn't call because he assumed mobile would be more, not less. That assumption costs people a lot of money.
The whole job was done on site, in the J Street Corridor lot, before he had to be anywhere.
