I was working out of Midtown Ventura on a Tuesday when a call came in from a woman at a grooming salon a few blocks over. She had a 2021 Kona and her only fob had been doing something strange for about a week. The car would start sometimes, then throw a key-not-detected warning for no clear reason, then start again like nothing happened. That day it just stopped cooperating entirely.

I opened the fob right there on the hood. The CR2032 looked new but it had a slight tilt to it, which told me someone had been in there already. I reseated it, cleaned the contacts, and tried the fob. Still inconsistent. That ruled out the easy fix.
Moved to the diagnostic side. Connected through the OBD port, read the immobilizer, and the existing key data was intact but the fob was showing communication issues. The fob itself was the problem, not the vehicle side. I programmed a new fob to her vehicle, registered it, confirmed the old fob still worked as a backup since she wanted to keep it, and walked every function before I packed up.
The whole job took about 35 minutes on site. She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a wait of several days just to get an appointment. That part I hear a lot.
