A body shop out in Pierpont called me on a Thursday. They had a 2025 Kona sitting in their lot after a fender repair, and the owner needed a key made before he could take the vehicle back. A different locksmith had already been out there. That locksmith got an error mid-programming, couldn't recover, told the shop the immobilizer module was likely bad, and left.

I brought bench programming equipment specifically because I've seen this before. When the standard communication path is closed off by a previous failed attempt, you work directly with the module. I pulled it, read the data off the chip, cleared the fault state, and rebuilt the key registration from scratch. Once the module was back to a clean state, the new fob paired on the first attempt.
From the time I pulled into the shop to the time I handed the owner a working key was about 80 minutes. He asked what the dealer would have charged. I told him to call around if he wanted, but between the flatbed, the multi-day queue, and dealer key pricing, he was looking at a lot more than what he paid me. He already knew that. He just wanted to hear it confirmed.
