2023 Hyundai Kona
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how does it start a 2023 Kona?

The smart key is a proximity fob that the vehicle detects when you're near it. The Kona's security system reads the fob wirelessly and, if it recognizes a valid enrolled key, allows the push-button start to function. There's also a transponder chip inside the fob that communicates during the start sequence as a second layer of verification. If the fob battery is low or dead, that wireless signal gets too weak to register.

Q: What equipment do you use to program a 2023 Hyundai Kona smart key?

For the 2023 Kona, PIN extraction is the first step, and the tool has to be capable of pulling that code from the vehicle before any key enrollment can happen. I use professional immobilizer programmers, including Autel units, that handle both the PIN read and the fob registration in the same session. Some 2022-and-newer Hyundai setups also need a secondary adapter to read the PIN when it isn't directly accessible through the standard diagnostic port.

Q: My 2023 Kona push-button start shows a key warning but the fob battery is brand new. What's going on?

This comes up a lot on Kona forums and it's almost never the fob itself. A few things cause this with a fresh battery. The battery could be seated slightly off, especially if the fob housing was pried open instead of released at the clip. A tilted cell makes intermittent contact and produces exactly the symptoms you're describing: the car sees the key sometimes, not others. It can also be antenna-related.

Q: I have one working key for my 2023 Kona. Should I get a spare made now or wait until I need it?

Get the spare now. All-keys-lost on a smart key vehicle is a longer, more involved job than adding a second key while the first one still works. When you have a working key present, the process is faster. If you lose that last key, the job involves a full key memory reset before anything new can be enrolled, and that process has a timed sequence built in. More time, more complexity, higher cost.

2023 Hyundai Kona Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

North Ventura, early evening. A mom called from the overflow lot at a pediatrician's office on a weeknight. Her toddler had been running a fever all day and she was ready to get home. The 2023 Kona wouldn't respond to the fob. Nothing. The push-button start sat there dark.

I was about 20 minutes out when she called. She'd already tried walking around the car twice clicking the fob like maybe she was just too far away. She wasn't.

When I got there, I pulled the emergency key blade from the fob housing, got the door open, and checked the fob battery first. The cell had corroded enough inside the contact tray that the fob wasn't putting out a usable signal. It wasn't a programming failure. It was just a dead connection.

New fob, PIN read, programmed through the diagnostic port, tested lock and unlock, confirmed the push-button recognized it cleanly. Then I walked her through the emergency blade backup start procedure so she'd have it if a battery ever caught her off guard again. That part takes two minutes and she didn't know it existed.

From her call to engine running was 44 minutes. The dealer was already closed. She got her son home, gave him his medicine, and had him in bed before 8:30. The dealer comparison barely came up. The point was just getting her moving.

Hyundai Kona Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

Three things to check before anyone touches your Kona. First, look up the business name on the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services website. Every legitimate locksmith company in California has a BSIS license number they can give you on the spot, no hesitation. If they can't produce it, hang up. Second, ask for a firm quote over the phone for your specific year and model.
