Near the Ojai Certified Farmers' Market, at a physical therapy office just off the main road, a retired judge called me about his 2010 Jaguar XF. He had a recent hip replacement, was on a walker, and his aide was off for the day. His only smart key's remote buttons had quit. The emergency blade still opened the driver door through the HU92 keyway, but once inside, the dash just read "SMART KEY NOT DETECTED" and the engine would not turn over.
Getting to the nearest Jaguar dealer was not a simple drive for him. It was a logistical problem he could not solve alone that morning.
I got there before noon. Used my HU92 Lishi to decode the lock and verify his blade cut matched. Then I popped the fob open on his walker tray so he could see what I was looking at. The CR2032 had leaked. Green crust all over the PCB near the battery terminals. The Hitag2 transponder was not getting clean power, so the KVM could not complete the handshake to authorize the start.
I cleaned the board with contact cleaner, seated a fresh CR2032, and connected through OBD to re-register the fob to the KVM. Walked every button, tested passive entry on both front doors, trunk release, start-stop cycle twice.
He watched the whole thing from his chair by the window. Didn't have to leave the building. The dealer would have meant a tow, a wait, and a ride he had no way to arrange. He just needed the right person to show up.
