Upper Ojai call, mid-morning on a Tuesday. A retired judge had been going to a physical therapy office off the Ojai Valley Road corridor for weeks after a hip replacement. His aide was off that day, he had a walker, and the nearest Jaguar dealer might as well have been on the moon. His 2017 XF was sitting in the lot and he could not get it to start.
He had gotten in using the emergency blade tucked inside the fob, but once he sat down, the car would not recognize the fob to let him start. The remote buttons were also dead. The CR2032 had leaked, barely visible unless you knew where to look, just a faint residue around the positive contact on the circuit board inside. Not enough to spot on a casual look but enough to corrupt the connection. I cleaned the board contacts, seated a fresh battery correctly, and then connected through the OBD port to re-register the fob to the vehicle.
The whole thing took about fifty minutes. He started the car sitting right there in that parking lot, in the shade, without driving anywhere or waiting for a parts order. I showed him what corroded battery contact looks like so he would recognize it again.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a multi-day process involving a tow because the car would not drive in for an appointment in its current state. That was before they even confirmed whether the fob or the module was the issue. He had not called them back. He called me instead.
