A warehouse stocker over in the East Area One neighborhood in Santa Paula flagged me down about his 2011 Soul. Another locksmith had made him a key maybe two weeks earlier. It worked at first. Then it started acting up.
Mornings, push-to-start fired right up. By evening, the dash would flash "Key is not detected" and the start button did nothing. He thought something electrical was going bad in the car. It wasn't.
I pulled his fob apart on the tailgate. FCC ID SY5HMFNA04, part number 95440-3N250, all correct on the outside. But inside, the transponder chip was wrong. The previous locksmith had loaded a generic ID46 that passed initial registration but failed after the immobilizer ran deeper verification over multiple drive cycles. Kia's system on these first-gen Souls will accept a close-but-wrong chip temporarily, then reject it once the rolling security counter advances. It is one of those mistakes that looks like a success for about a week.
I used my VVDI2 to read what was in his bad key, confirmed the chip generation mismatch, and programmed a fresh SY5HMFNA04 with the correct PCF7952 ID46 chip. His CR2032 was also reading low, which was making the proximity detection even flakier, so I swapped that too.
That was months ago. Still working. The difference between a key that holds and one that ghosts on you after ten days is the chip inside.
