A warehouse stocker from Downtown Santa Paula called me about his 2011 Soul. He had a key made by someone else a couple of weeks earlier and it had stopped working reliably. Not all at once. It would start fine in the morning, and by the time he got off his shift, the push-button would flash a key-not-detected warning and the car would sit there. He thought the car was developing an electrical fault.
I met him in the lot. He handed me the fob and I could feel it had been opened before, not cleanly. The battery clip had a slight bend, and the CR2032 sitting in there was the original, not a fresh one like the other locksmith apparently claimed. That alone was part of the problem. Weak power made proximity detection inconsistent, which made the whole thing look random.
But there was more to it. When I pulled up the key registration data through the OBD port, the transponder chip enrolled in his key was not the right generation for this vehicle. On Kia's system from this era, a close-but-wrong chip can pass the initial enrollment and even start the car a few times. Then the vehicle's security system runs deeper verification over multiple drive cycles, catches the mismatch, and starts refusing. That's exactly what he was experiencing. It wasn't random at all. It was the car doing exactly what it was supposed to do.
I programmed a new key with the correct transponder chip and a fresh CR2032 seated properly, re-registered the fob, and walked every function: lock, unlock, the start button reading the fob through the button, and the emergency blade insert as a backup. The car started first try and kept starting.
He asked what the dealer would have told him. Honestly, they probably would have started chasing an antenna or a body control module before someone thought to look at the key itself. He saved a good chunk and kept his car in the lot instead of on a flatbed.
