Got a call from a guy in the Main Street corridor in Santa Paula. His 2012 Soul with the push-button start was dead in a parking lot. Tried the fob, nothing. Tried holding it against the start button, nothing. He was already looking up tow trucks when he found my number.
I pulled up, checked the basics. The SY5HMFNA04 fob had a fresh CR2032, so that was not the issue. Plugged my IM608 into the OBD port, pulled the 6-digit security PIN from the immobilizer module, and found the key had dropped out of registration. That happens on these first-gen Souls. The body control module on the 91950-2K310 board just loses the handshake sometimes, and the fix is a full re-learn, not a new fob.
Ran the key learn sequence, got the ID46 chip talking to the immobilizer again, and started testing. Proximity unlock on both front handles. Lock button on the handle. All four fob buttons from about 30 feet. Three cold starts in a row with a pause between each one.
He stood there watching the third start and said, "That is the same key. It just forgot my car." Pretty much, yeah.
He was about to tow to a Kia dealer, which would have run him way more plus days without the car. Instead he drove home twenty minutes after I arrived.
