I was called out to East Santa Paula on a weekday afternoon. The owner had a 2012 Soul and one working key, and he'd already been to a locksmith once. That first guy programmed a fob, handed it over, and left. The fob locked and unlocked from three feet away and that was apparently good enough.
By the time the owner called me, the second fob was doing the same thing his original had started doing: spotty range, door handle touch unlock dropping out intermittently, and the car occasionally throwing a key-not-detected warning on startup before clearing itself. He wasn't sure if the issue was the fob, the programming, or something deeper in the vehicle security system.
I started the way I always start. Checked the battery in both fobs. His daily driver had a CR2032 that was reading low. The second fob, the one the previous locksmith programmed, had a battery that measured fine but was sitting slightly off-center in the clip. Classic pry-open damage.
Reseated that battery, straightened the contact clip, and retested. Range came back to where it should be. Touch unlock on the driver door came back. Then I did the part most people skip: I ran every button on both fobs, walked away from the car to real-world distance, tested the touch handles on both sides, and did three consecutive ignition cycles to confirm clean starts with no warning lights.
He watched the whole thing. Told me the first guy had been there maybe eight minutes total.
I don't hand back a key until I've stood at that car long enough to actually trust it. That's the job.
