Saturday night in Simi Valley, out near the Tapo Canyon Road corridor, a couple walked out of a sushi place and their 2018 Kia Stinger would not start. Dead fob. The dash just kept flashing "Key Not In Vehicle" no matter where they held it.
Neither of them knew about the backup start method where you press the dead fob flat against the start button and the RFID chip in the key talks to the ring antenna around the ignition at close range. They were ready to leave the car overnight and deal with it Monday.
I was about 15 minutes out with everything I needed already in the van. HY22 laser key blanks, CR2032 cells, smart fob shells, and programming hardware. The fob was their original, part number 95440-J5000, FCC ID TQ8-FOB-4F15. Popped it open on the hood. The CR2032 was corroded on one terminal, barely making contact. Cleaned the board contacts on the 95440-J5000 PCB, seated a fresh battery, and ran a quick re-registration through the OBD port to confirm the immobilizer accepted both of their fobs with no fault codes stored in the SMARTRA III module.
Tested all four buttons. Proximity unlock on both front handles. Push-to-start on the first press. Walked the car, checked the trunk release, locked it from ten feet away.
They drove home that night. The whole thing took less than half an hour, for a fraction of what the dealer would have quoted, and they did not have to wait until Monday.
