Got a call from a guy up in the Mission Canyon area of Santa Barbara. He works on his own cars, the kind of person who has a creeper and a torque wrench in the garage but draws the line at electronics. His 2020 Kia Stinger GT had been sitting for about two weeks while he was out of town, and when he got back, the smart key was completely dead. Push the start button, nothing. Dashboard just sat there with "Key is not detected" staring at him.
He tried the emergency start method, holding the fob right against the start button. Engine turned over. But the proximity unlock on both front doors was gone, trunk release did nothing from the fob, and the lock and unlock buttons only worked if he was standing within about two feet. Classic CR2032 drain.
I pulled the TQ8-FOB-4F15 apart on his workbench. The battery tested at 1.8 volts. These fobs want a solid 3 volts to keep the passive entry antenna happy. Fresh CR2032 in, contacts clean, case snapped back together.
Then I walked the car. Driver handle touch lock, passenger handle, rear doors, trunk button, start from the driver seat, start from the passenger seat with the fob in the cupholder. Everything came back.
He kept saying he was about to order a whole new fob from the dealer. Saved himself a good chunk and about a week of waiting just by having someone check the simple stuff first.
