Worst case on a 2016 Lincoln Navigator is an all-keys-lost smart key where the car battery died during programming and the body control module throws errors. A power interruption mid-security-handshake can lock the BCM into a fault state that makes some locksmiths pack up and leave.
A customer at a body shop in Oxnard had exactly that situation. Another locksmith attempted a key replacement on his Navigator, the battery dropped voltage during programming, and the BCM went into security lockout. The other locksmith told him the module was bad and left. The body shop called me.
I brought my ACDP bench tool as backup. I recovered through OBD by stabilizing the battery with my jump pack first, then clearing the fault codes with my IM608 before starting a clean programming sequence. On Lincoln, the immobilizer logic lives in the BCM on push-to-start models and the PCM on older PATS models. His smart key, FCC ID M3N-5WY8609, was a 5-button Intelligent Access fob. The fault cleared and the new fob learned on the first attempt after stabilization.
Total was about an hour and forty minutes. His bill was 95. The alternative was a flatbed to the dealer, a multi-day wait, and 200 or more.
