2002 Lincoln Navigator Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy called me from a parking lot on Meade Street up on The Mesa in Santa Barbara. He had two keys for his 2002 Navigator, one stopped working a while back and he kept meaning to deal with it, and then the second one decided to make the decision for him.

He turned it off to run an errand, came back out, and the key did nothing. Engine cranked, no start. He tried a few more times. Same thing. He figured it was a dead battery in a fob, then remembered this key doesn't have a fob.

I pulled up, looked at the key, looked at the blank. Somebody had made him a copy at some point, probably a hardware store or a grocery kiosk, and it had been slowly getting less reliable every time the signal degraded a little more. That copied blank was not the right transponder blank. It had been marginal for who knows how long and finally gave out entirely.

I cut a proper replacement key to his vehicle, enrolled it through the OBD port, and tested it through several start cycles while he waited. Then I did the same for a second key so he'd have a real spare this time.

He mentioned the dealer situation almost as an afterthought. Said he'd called them earlier in the week about the first key dying and the quote came back at a number that made him put it off. He paid a fraction of that, didn't tow the truck anywhere, and was back in his driveway on The Mesa before lunch.
