I got a call at 6:18 in the morning from a guy in Carriage Square, Oxnard. His only fob to his 2017 Navigator had stopped responding overnight. No warning, no gradual fade. He pushed the start button, nothing happened. Tried the door handle, nothing. He had somewhere to be.
He had already done the battery. Fresh CR2032, seated correctly. Still dead wirelessly. But when he followed the owner's manual and held the fob against the backup slot in the center console, the truck started right up. That told me a lot before I even pulled out of my driveway.
When I got there, I had him run through the door handles while I watched. Driver side touch unlock: nothing. Passenger side: working. Start from the slot: working. That pattern points away from the fob itself. The fob was communicating fine at close range. The wireless reception on the driver side was the problem.
I programmed a second fob for him so he had a spare, and we confirmed both keys worked at normal range on the passenger side. The driver-side antenna issue is a vehicle-side repair, a different job for a different day, but at least he left with a working backup and understood exactly what was happening. He wasn't stranded, and he wasn't guessing anymore.
The dealer quote he'd gotten the week before for a new fob and reprogramming was sitting in his email. He said my bill was a fraction of that, and the dealer hadn't even asked him the backup-slot question.
