A guy in Windsor North/River Ridge had a 1999 Navigator sitting in a storage bay off the River Ridge corridor. Classic car collector, serious about his vehicles. He had two keys once. Now he had one, and it was worn down to the point where he was jiggling it every time he started the car, hoping it read.
He'd done some forum research. Found a post from years back saying the early Ford passive anti-theft system was dealer-only territory. That post wasn't wrong for its time, but it was written for people who didn't have the right equipment. He assumed that still applied.
I pulled up to the unit on a Saturday morning. He had the Navigator out on the apron, idling. He shut it off so I could work.
The original key head was sun-faded and the plastic had a hairline crack right across the top. It had probably been rattling around in a cup holder or a sun-baked glovebox for years. The cut was still readable. I decoded the blade, cut a new key, and programmed the transponder chip to the vehicle's immobilizer through the OBD port with my programmer. Took the better part of 20 minutes start to finish, including a couple of start cycles to confirm both keys were enrolling cleanly.
He said the dealer had quoted him a weekday appointment, a possible tow if the car wasn't drivable, and a price that made him wince. I did it in his storage lot on a weekend morning for a fraction of that. The Navigator fired right up on the first turn with the new key. He went back inside to move a '67 Continental.
