Got a call from a guy over in Wilson Park, Oxnard. He had a 1999 Lincoln Navigator sitting in front of a storage facility with one worn-out key that was getting harder to turn in the ignition. The bow was cracked and he could see the little glass transponder tube starting to peek through the plastic. He was babying it every time he started it, scared it would snap off inside the cylinder.
He had called the Lincoln dealer already. They told him he needed to tow it in, leave it for a day, and that they would need his VIN to order the blank. He asked if he could just bring the key in. They said no, the car has to be present for PATS programming.
I drove out with my VVDI Key Tool and a stack of H72-PT blanks. Cut the new key by code using his VIN, then ran the two-key PATS procedure through the OBD-II port. On PATS II, the PCM needs to cycle through a ten-minute security timer per key. I programmed two fresh transponders so he would have a proper spare.
He held the old key up to the new one and just shook his head. Same cut, same chip type, one was falling apart and the other was clean. The Navigator fired right up, theft light went solid then off, which is exactly what you want to see.
He tucked the spare in his wallet. Smart move for a truck that only came with two keys from the factory 25 years ago.
