A dentist at her office garage over near the Oxnard Auto Center had everything ready when I got there. She had texted me the VIN while I was finishing my last job. With that VIN I already knew her key setup: remote head key, FCC ID CWTWB1U793, 3-button, 80-bit PATS transponder, H75 blade. I had the blank cut in the van before I parked.
She still had one working key. That matters. Add-a-key on a 2012 Navigator skips the full security erase and the 10-minute PATS timer the system forces during an all-keys-lost procedure. I plugged my IM608 into the OBD-II port, read the PCM and the PATS module through the CAN bus, and wrote the new transponder into the existing key memory without touching the old one.
Then the part that actually takes the longest: testing. Lock, unlock, trunk release from the fob. Start, shut off, start again. Walk-away auto-lock. I cycled it three times because the PATS confirmation on these sometimes hiccups on the first cold start after a new key write.
Total time from parking to handing her a tested spare was about 22 minutes. She looked at the key like she expected more steps. There weren't any.
She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a wait of several days and a price that made the spare feel optional. It wasn't optional anymore.
