I was parked near Hobson Park finishing a different job when the call came in. Guy in Oxnard, a Navigator, snapped key still in his door lock cylinder. Not the ignition, the door. He'd been wiggling it for twenty minutes trying to coax it out.
By the time I pulled up, he'd made it worse. The broken shank was pushed further in and the cylinder wasn't turning anymore. He apologized like it was my problem. It wasn't. I extracted the broken blade, decoded the lock face to get the cut depths, and cut a fresh key blade on site. Programming the replacement to the vehicle security system came next. There's a timed security relearn cycle built into the all-keys-lost procedure on these, so I used that window to test the new blade in the door, the ignition, and the rear liftgate lock. By the time the relearn sequence finished, everything was confirmed and working.
He asked what the dealer would have charged. I told him to call and find out. He laughed and said he'd take my word for it.
