Got a call from a guy up in the Riviera neighborhood in Santa Barbara. He had a 2006 Lincoln Navigator parked in a steep driveway, one key left, and it was starting to act funny. The remote buttons had gone intermittent, sometimes locking on the first press, sometimes needing three or four clicks from two feet away. He figured the whole key was failing.
I pulled the key apart on his tailgate. The CR2032 was original. 2006 original. Almost two decades of slow drain. The battery contact plates inside the CWTWB1U793 housing had some light corrosion, green film where the positive terminal sits. Cleaned the contacts, dropped in a fresh CR2032, and the remote range came right back.
But that wasn't really why I was there. He wanted a spare. Only one working key on an 18-year-old truck is a gamble he didn't want to keep taking.
I cut a new H75 blade to his door lock, cloned the 4D-63 80-bit transponder through the OBD-II port using the PATS security access timing, and programmed the remote functions to his body control module. Lock, unlock, trunk release on the third button. Walked around the truck testing range from 30 feet out.
He said he'd been quoted a tow to the dealer plus a weekday-only appointment. Instead, the whole thing happened in his driveway in about 40 minutes.
