How long does it take to get a replacement key from a Lincoln dealer?

The actual programming time at the dealer is not short to begin with -- the security system enforces a timed pause between key registrations, so if multiple keys are being programmed the dealer is sitting and waiting through that cycle just like anyone else would be. But the bigger issue is getting into the service bay at all. Lincoln service departments are often booked days or weeks out, and a key job without a running vehicle to drive in creates a logistics problem on top of the scheduling one.

When I do it on the Eastside, I'm at your location. Add-a-key on a 2006 Navigator runs well under an hour start to finish. All-keys-lost takes a bit longer because of how the security sequence works with no enrolled keys present, but it's still a same-day job done wherever your truck is sitting.

What exactly is a remote head key and what's inside it?

It's a key where the fob is built into the head of the blade -- one piece, not a separate fob on a ring. Your 2006 Navigator uses this setup. Inside the head there's a transponder chip that the immobilizer reads through a coil at the ignition cylinder every time you turn the key. There's also the remote electronics that handle your three-button fob functions, powered by the CR2032 battery.

Both sides have to work. A key that's cut correctly and has a live battery but was never programmed won't start the truck -- the immobilizer blocks it. And a key that was once programmed but has a dead battery will still start the truck, because the transponder is passive and doesn't need the CR2032 to communicate with the ignition coil. That surprises people. The battery only powers the remote buttons, not the start function.

Why does Lincoln key replacement take so long at the dealer?

Three things stack up. The security system has a built-in timing sequence during programming -- it's not instant, and the dealer can't skip it any more than I can. Then there's parts: if the dealer doesn't have the right remote head key in stock, the fob gets ordered separately, which can add days. And then there's the appointment itself. A non-running vehicle that needs a tow is a scheduling puzzle for most service departments.

A mobile locksmith doing the same programming job does it wherever the truck is, with parts already on hand. No appointment queue, no parts delay, no tow required.

Question 4

I bought a replacement remote head key online. Can I just bring it to you to program?

Accepted Answer

Sometimes, but check the factory FCC ID on the fob before you buy or bring anything over. The 2006 Navigator takes a specific remote head key, and aftermarket fobs vary in quality -- some work fine once programmed, some have radio transmitter issues that no amount of programming will fix because the hardware is just not reliable. I've seen people save a few dollars on the fob itself and then have the remote side fail within a few months.

If you already have one, bring it and we'll look at it together. If you haven't bought yet, I carry the right units and the cut and program are done in one trip. Either way, that fob has to be programmed to your specific truck -- it won't work out of any box.

Question 5

My 2006 Navigator starts fine but the fob buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily. Start with the CR2032 -- a weak battery in a remote head key will kill button range and response before it affects anything else. Pop the back of the housing, swap in a fresh CR2032, and test all three buttons close to the truck first, then at normal distance.

If a new battery doesn't bring it back, the next check is the housing itself. These remote head keys take daily abuse -- they're in pockets, dropped, sat on -- and the internal contact board can shift or corrode. If the housing has visible cracks or the buttons feel mushy and inconsistent, the fob side of the key may just be worn out. The transponder and the ignition cut will still work, but the remote is gone.

At that point you're looking at a replacement remote head key, cut to your vehicle and programmed. The old key stays in the system as a backup if you want it.
