Got a call from a guy in the Loma Vista neighborhood in Ventura. He'd been watching my YouTube channel for a while, saw me do a Mitsubishi transponder key job on camera, and saved my number months before he ever needed it.
His 2002 Galant had one key left, and the blade was worn down to almost nothing. It still started the car, but he had to jiggle it in the ignition every time. He said he kept meaning to get a spare and just never got around to it. Classic.
I met him in his driveway, decoded the lock, and cut a fresh MIT9 blade on site. Then I used my VVDI Key Tool to clone the ID46 chip onto the new transponder key. Three clean starts, tested the mechanical turn in both the ignition and the driver door, and confirmed the immobilizer light on the dash killed itself within a couple of seconds each time, exactly like it should.
The whole thing took about 20 minutes. He stood there watching and said he felt dumb for putting it off so long. I told him most people call me after the last key breaks, not before. He was actually ahead of the game.
He kept the old worn key as a backup in his glovebox. Not a bad move, honestly. Two keys are always better than the phone call you have to make when you're down to zero.
