A guy in Midtown Ventura called me on a Tuesday afternoon. His 2002 Galant started fine the day before. That morning it cranked, turned over, and died. Cranked again, died again. He thought it was fuel. He had already called a mechanic.
I asked him one question: did his key look worn, or had he been using a copy of a copy for a while? He went quiet for a second. Turns out the key he was using was a hardware-store cut made from another hardware-store cut. The blade still worked the lock cylinder, but the transponder in the original had been cracked at some point and he never noticed because the car had been starting on the edge of a good read for months.
I came out to him. Brought the original key to check, confirmed the chip was the problem, cut a new blade from his lock, and programmed the transponder to the immobilizer on site. Three clean start cycles. Car ran fine.

He didn't want to tow a running-condition car to a shop that wasn't sure what they were looking at. He paid a fraction of what that dealer visit would have cost, and he was back on the road the same afternoon.
