2003 Mitsubishi Galant
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Can you delete a lost or stolen key from my Galant so it can't start the car anymore?

Yes. When new keys are programmed, the immobilizer memory gets cleared and only the keys present during that session get registered. Any lost or stolen key that was previously programmed is wiped out at that point. It won't start the car. The 2003 Galant uses a turn-key ignition system, so there's no fob or remote entry to worry about on the separate side. You leave with the confidence that the old key is dead.

Q: My 2003 Galant takes a transponder key, but someone told me I can just use a regular cut key. Is that true?

No. A blade cut to the correct profile will turn the ignition, but the car won't stay running. The immobilizer reads the transponder chip inside the key head during startup. If it doesn't see a valid signal, the engine shuts down within a couple seconds of starting. This is exactly the failure mode that gets misdiagnosed as a fuel or electrical problem.

Q: The Galant cranks and fires but dies after two seconds. How do I know if it's the transponder or something else?

That two-second start-and-die pattern is the immobilizer's signature. It's designed to allow just enough fuel to make the engine feel like it almost started, then cut it. A failed fuel pump usually won't let the engine catch at all, or causes a stumble under load, not a clean two-second cycle. A faulty crank sensor typically causes a no-start without that brief catch.

Q: I found a replacement key for my 2003 Galant online. Can I program it myself at home?

Not on this one. The 2003 Galant does not have an owner-accessible onboard programming sequence for the transponder. Some older domestic vehicles let you cycle the ignition a certain number of times to enter a self-program mode, but Mitsubishi did not include that on this generation. Programming requires a tool that communicates through the diagnostic port. If you already have the key, bring it, and I can program it to your vehicle.

2003 Mitsubishi Galant Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman out near Mussel Shoals. She'd already replaced the fuel pump based on what a shop told her. The car would crank, catch for a second, then die. Every time. New fuel pump didn't change a thing.

She found me after the shop told her they weren't sure what else to try.

When I got there, the story came out: she'd had a spare key made at a hardware store kiosk a few months back and had been using it as her daily driver key since her original wore down. The kiosk cut the blade fine, but it's a transponder key, and those machines don't program chips. She'd been starting the car on the original long enough that it finally failed to the point she couldn't use it, then switched to the copy full-time. The copy had never been programmed. It was just metal.

I programmed a new key to the vehicle on site. The engine started and stayed running on the first try. She stood there for a moment, then said something like "so the pump was never the problem." No, it wasn't.

The whole job took under an hour in her driveway. No tow, no shop visit, no waiting. The dealer would have been a multi-day ordeal with a tow bill stacked on top.

Mitsubishi Galant Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2003 Mitsubishi Galant?▼

Skip the dealer and call a mobile locksmith. All-keys-lost on a 2003 Galant means cutting a new key blade and programming the transponder chip to the vehicle's immobilizer from scratch, since there are no existing working keys to piggyback off. Dealers route this through their service department, which often means a tow because the car won't start, then a wait for parts or a tech opening. Mobile service changes that.
