2004 Mitsubishi Galant
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2004 Mitsubishi Galant Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A call came in from North Ventura, a woman stuck in a parking lot off Telephone Road. Her 2004 Galant would crank but die immediately, every single time. She had already tried the spare key, same result. She figured it was a fuel or engine problem and was about to call a tow.

I told her that pattern on a Galant this age is worth looking at from the key side before anything else.

When I got there, I pulled up the security system data at the OBD port first. The immobilizer was logging a no-recognition event. The transponder in her daily key had given up. The chip inside the head wasn't transmitting anymore. Physically the key was fine, the blade turned, the car cranked. But the engine management never got the authorization signal, so it shut right back down.

I decoded her lock, cut a new blade, and programmed the replacement key on site. Then I did three consecutive cold starts to confirm the handshake was solid every time, not just once.

She had already looked up the dealer. The appointment availability and the estimate she got back were both discouraging. She paid a fraction of that, in the parking lot, and drove home the same afternoon.

The tow truck never got called.
