Got a call from the Montalvo neighborhood in Ventura. A woman's 2004 Galant wouldn't start in her driveway. She said the security light on the dash was staying on solid instead of going out after a few seconds. Engine cranked fine but refused to catch.
She'd already had AAA come out. They told her it was the starter. It wasn't.
When I got there I looked at the key first. The plastic shell was cracked down the seam near the blade, held together with electrical tape. Classic 8th-gen Galant key problem. These MIT6 shells get brittle after years in a pocket, and once the housing splits, the ID46 transponder chip can shift or lose contact with the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder.
I connected my IM608 to the OBD-II port, read the ETACS module, pulled the immobilizer PIN, and confirmed the system wasn't seeing any valid transponder signal. Cut a fresh MIT6 blade by decoding her door lock, seated a new ID46 chip, and registered it through the ETACS. Three consecutive starts, key in and out each time, security light cycling off within two seconds every round.
She stood in the driveway watching me start her own car over and over. Quiet for a second, then: "So it was the key this whole time."
Took about 25 minutes. The dealer quoted her a tow plus a wait of several days. She drove to work instead.
