2000 Mitsubishi Montero Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call on a weekday morning from someone parked near College Estates in Oxnard. She'd had a spare key cut at a hardware store after misplacing her original, and now the car would crank fine but die almost immediately after firing. She figured it was a fuel issue, maybe a pump. She wasn't blaming the key at all.
I asked her one question: where did she get the spare cut? Hardware store, she said. That was it.
The blade was correct. It turned the ignition, released the cylinder, and the starter did its job. But the key head was a plain, unclipped blank with no chip inside. The immobilizer never saw a valid signal and shut the engine down a second after it caught. Classic crank-and-die, and the kind of thing that sends people to mechanics instead of locksmiths.
I was already in the area. I pulled up, verified the VIN, confirmed ownership, and cut a proper replacement key with the correct transponder chip in the head. Programmed it through the OBD port, tested the start twice, let her feel the difference herself.
She'd already spent money on a key that looked right but wasn't. The mechanic she almost called would have spent an hour chasing a fuel or sensor problem that didn't exist. The dealer would have had her tow it in and wait a day. She got it handled in her driveway, same morning she called.
