Got a call from a guy over in Heritage Square in Oxnard. His 2000 Montero had one key left and the plastic was cracked right through the bow where the transponder chip sits. He had been nursing it for weeks, holding it together with electrical tape. Then the tape shifted, the chip lost alignment with the antenna ring around the ignition, and the immobilizer killed the fuel injection mid-errand.
He was parked at the curb. Engine cranked strong but would not catch. The security light on the cluster was blinking steady, which on these second-gen Monteros means the ETACS module is not reading a valid transponder signal.
I pulled up, checked the VIN off the dash, and confirmed the key specs. The 2000 Montero uses a mechanical MIT3 blade profile and a 4D-61 chip. No remote, no buttons, just the transponder embedded in the key head. I cut the blade in my van using the code pulled from the VIN, then cloned the 4D-61 chip off his broken original using my VVDI Key Tool.
Whole thing took about 20 minutes. He turned the key, the security light went solid for a second, then off. Engine fired.
He asked if he should get a second copy made while I was there. Smart move. I cut and programmed a spare on the spot. Two working keys, no tow, no dealer wait list.
