2001 Mitsubishi Montero
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I need to tow my Montero to the dealer for a key replacement?

No. Dealers will often tell you to bring the vehicle in, which means a tow if you have no working key. Mitsubishi's dealer network in this part of California isn't dense, so that tow can add real time and real money to a job that should be simple. I come to your location in Oxnard with everything needed to cut and program the key on the spot.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and your registration or title. I verify the VIN from the dashboard plate or the door jamb sticker before any work starts. Key code data for vehicles like the Montero sits behind ownership-verified databases, so neither a dealer nor a mobile locksmith will proceed without documentation. The difference is I handle the verification on site, right at your vehicle, instead of behind a service counter.

Q: My 2001 Montero cranks but won't stay running. Could this be an immobilizer problem?

That crank-and-die pattern is one of the most common signs the vehicle security system didn't recognize the key. What happens is the engine fires briefly on starter energy, then cuts out once the system confirms it doesn't see a valid signal from the transponder chip in the key. It can feel like a fuel or ignition problem, and a lot of people chase those first. A few things can cause it.

Q: Can I get a spare key made for the Montero, or is a spare not worth the trouble on a vehicle this old?

Worth it. One key on a vehicle this age is a real risk. If it snaps, gets lost, or the chip degrades, you're looking at a lockout with no fallback. Having a second programmed key in a drawer at home costs a fraction of what an emergency all-keys-lost job runs, and the all-keys-lost process takes longer because the system has to be handled differently when there's no working key to reference.

2001 Mitsubishi Montero Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a guy parked near the Channel Islands Harbor marina. He had a 2001 Montero and one key, and that key had snapped at the base of the blade where the plastic bow meets the metal.

The blade was still in his pocket. The bow with the chip was on the floor of the cab. He'd been carrying both pieces around for two days, jamming them together to start it, which works until it doesn't.

He found a locksmith closer to him first. That shop cut him a new blade, handed it over, and charged him for the cut. Car would not start. The new blade fit the ignition perfectly, turned freely, just no transponder. So he was back to jamming the broken original into the cylinder while the new key sat in his cupholder doing nothing.

That's when he called me.

I pulled up to the harbor parking area with the right blank already in hand. Cut the blade on site, transferred the chip work over to the new key using my programmer through the OBD port, and enrolled it. Then I tested it six times: started, shut off, started again, let the engine sit a minute, started again. Solid every time.

He asked what the dealer would've charged. I told him to look it up and call me back after. He never called back, which is usually a good sign.

Mitsubishi Montero Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I am locked out with no spare key. Can you come to me?▼

Yes. I come to you wherever you are in Oxnard, including out near Channel Islands Harbor. I carry the key blanks and programming equipment for the 2001 Montero in the van, so there's no shop drop-off, no tow, and no waiting around for a parts order. One call and I'm on my way. If you're on foot or stuck somewhere the car can't move, that's exactly the situation mobile service is built for.
