2001 Mitsubishi Montero Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call from a guy parked near the Channel Islands Harbor marina. He had a 2001 Montero and one key, and that key had snapped at the base of the blade where the plastic bow meets the metal. The blade was still in his pocket. The bow with the chip was on the floor of the cab. He'd been carrying both pieces around for two days, jamming them together to start it, which works until it doesn't.
He found a locksmith closer to him first. That shop cut him a new blade, handed it over, and charged him for the cut. Car would not start. The new blade fit the ignition perfectly, turned freely, just no transponder. So he was back to jamming the broken original into the cylinder while the new key sat in his cupholder doing nothing.
That's when he called me.
I pulled up to the harbor parking area with the right blank already in hand. Cut the blade on site, transferred the chip work over to the new key using my programmer through the OBD port, and enrolled it. Then I tested it six times: started, shut off, started again, let the engine sit a minute, started again. Solid every time.
He asked what the dealer would've charged. I told him to look it up and call me back after. He never called back, which is usually a good sign.
