Got a call from a woman over in the Silver Strand neighborhood in Oxnard. She had a 2001 Montero sitting in her driveway with one key left, and the plastic shell was held together with electrical tape. The blade was so worn you could see daylight through the cuts.

She told me she had already called around. The closest Mitsubishi dealer wanted her to tow the truck in, order the key blank, wait a few days for it to arrive, then come back for the cut and program. Two trips minimum, plus the tow because the key was barely turning the ignition anymore.

The 2001 Montero uses the ETACS immobilizer with an ID46 transponder, so I connected my IM608 to the OBD-II port under the dash and ran the key learning procedure. Cut the new blade to code, registered the chip, and tested ignition, doors, and the glove box cylinder just to be thorough.

The whole thing took maybe 25 minutes in her driveway. She peeled the electrical tape off the old key while I was packing up, looked at it, and just dropped it in the trash can right there. Didn't even keep it as a backup.

She kept her afternoon free and spent a fraction of what the dealer quoted.
