2004 Mitsubishi Montero
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I need to tow my Montero to the dealer for a key replacement?

No. Dealers will often tell you to tow it in, and with Mitsubishi's thinner dealer network compared to the big domestic brands, "tow it in" can mean real distance and real money before you even get to the key. I come to you. The whole job, decoding the cut, cutting the blade, programming the chip, gets done at your location. The tow truck stays out of it entirely.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and your registration or title. I also verify the VIN from the dashboard plate or the door jamb sticker to confirm the key specs match the vehicle. That verification step happens whether you go to a dealer or call me. The difference is I do it on site in a few minutes instead of at a service counter after a tow. No documentation, no key cut.

Q: My 2004 Montero starts and immediately stalls after I had a new key cut somewhere. What happened?

That pattern, starts then dies right away, is the immobilizer doing exactly what it's supposed to do. The blade was cut correctly but the transponder in the key head was never programmed to the vehicle. The engine control side sees an unrecognized chip and shuts fuel delivery down within a second or two. A key that looks right and fits the ignition perfectly will still do this every time if the chip enrollment step was skipped.

Q: Can I program a spare transponder key myself at home?

Not on this one. The 2004 Montero does not have a self-programming sequence you can run through ignition turns or button combinations. The transponder chip has to be enrolled through the OBD port with the right diagnostic equipment. If you picked up a key blank online thinking you'd handle the programming side yourself, you still need someone with the tools to finish it. The blank isn't usable until that step is done.

2004 Mitsubishi Montero Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy renting a unit near Windsor North/River Ridge in Oxnard called me about his 2004 Montero. One working key, no spare, and the plastic head was cracking along the base where people grip it. He'd already called the Mitsubishi dealer, gotten a quote that stopped him cold, and figured that was just what Montero keys cost. He wasn't in a hurry but he wasn't happy either.

I pulled up to his building and went straight to the door lock with a Lishi pick and decoder. Eight cut positions, read them all without disturbing his working key. Cut the blade on site, matched it to the lock before I even touched the ignition side.

Then I programmed the transponder chip through the OBD port. The Montero accepted the new key without drama. I handed it to him, he started the car twice to satisfy himself it wasn't a fluke, and that was the job.

He saved a good chunk compared to the dealer quote, and he never moved the car.

Mitsubishi Montero Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I'm locked out with no spare key. Can you come to me?▼

Yes. I come to wherever the Montero is sitting in Windsor North/River Ridge or anywhere in Oxnard. No tow, no drop-off, no waiting around a service department. I carry the blanks and tools for the 2004 Montero, so the job happens on site. If you have zero working keys, I can decode the door lock mechanically and cut a new blade without needing the original. Programming follows right there at the car.
