2003 Mitsubishi Montero Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
There's a gym near Blackstock in Oxnard, and the parking lot there has seen a few of my jobs over the years. This one stands out.
A guy had been fighting his 2003 Montero's ignition for weeks. Not a dead key, not a lost key. Just a lock that had gotten ornery. Some mornings it turned on the first try. Other mornings he sat there working it back and forth, trying different angles, waiting for the cylinder to cooperate. He'd been putting off dealing with it.
The dealer told him he needed a full ignition assembly swap, new keys included. He was close to scheduling it when a friend pointed him my way.
I pulled the cylinder and decoded it right there in the lot. Worn wafers, not a failed lock body. The cylinder itself was still serviceable. I replaced the worn wafers, cut a fresh key to match, and enrolled the transponder through the OBD port so it would talk to the immobilizer. I set the old worn wafers on the hood so he could see exactly what had been causing the bind.
The whole thing took about 45 minutes. He paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted, and he didn't need the full assembly they were pushing. The key turns clean now, first try every time.
