Over in Oxnard Shores, a guy had been dealing with his 2003 Montero ignition getting worse for weeks. Some mornings the key turned fine. Other mornings he sat there working the blade back and forth like he was picking a lock on his own truck.
He told me the dealer wanted a full ignition assembly replacement with new keys. He was about to book it when someone at his gym mentioned my name.
I got out there and pulled the cylinder. The MIT6 keyway lock wasn't failed. The wafers were worn. Mileage does that on these third-gen Monteros. The brass wafers lose their spring tension, they start tilting instead of dropping clean, and the key catches halfway through the turn. Eventually it either jams solid or the blade snaps off inside.
I backed up the immobilizer data through the ACDP, decoded the lock, swapped the worn wafers, and cut a fresh MIT6 blade. The ID46 transponder programmed right back through OBD using the existing ETACS pin. I showed him the old wafers side by side with the new ones so he could see where the edges had rounded off.
He stood there turning the key back and forth in the cylinder a few times like he was testing whether it would trick him again. It didn't. Smooth every turn. He got a working ignition repair for a fraction of what the dealer wanted for parts he didn't need.
