2002 Pontiac Aztek Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a guy at the Fremont Square Shopping Center area in Oxnard. His 2002 Aztek would crank but not fire. Dashboard lit up fine, fuel pump primed, but the engine just turned over and quit. The SECURITY telltale was glowing steady on the instrument cluster.

He had already tried the ten-minute relearn on his own. Turned the key to ON, waited for the SECURITY light to go out, turned it off, repeated it three times. Classic PK3 reset procedure. It did not take.

When I got there I checked the key first. His original had a PK3 chip but the plastic around the head was cracked and the transponder pellet was barely hanging on inside the housing. Every time he turned the key, the chip would shift just enough that the transceiver ring around the lock cylinder could not get a clean read. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it did not. That is the worst kind of intermittent.

Cut a fresh B99 transponder key on the van, programmed the new PK3 chip to his BCM through the OBD-II port. Ran the full relearn so the module accepted it. Then we did the ten-minute cycle one more time with his old key just to re-register it as a backup, since the chip was still alive, just loose.

He thought the fuel pump was going out. Spent a week thinking about towing it to a shop. Turned out to be a cracked key shell and a wobbly chip.
