Got a call from a guy at the Rose Shopping Center in Oxnard. His 2004 Aztek cranked fine but would not start. Dash was throwing "SECURITY" on the Driver Information Center and the theft light was solid on. He had already tried the key three times, sitting through the ten-minute relearn cycle each round, like the forums told him to. Thirty minutes gone in a parking lot.
When I pulled up he was leaned against the rear hatch, phone in hand, reading another thread telling him to do the same thing a fourth time.
I plugged into the OBD-II port and read the BCM. The PK3 transponder in his original key had just stopped communicating. It happens on these. The chip sits in the key head with no battery backup, and after 20 years of bouncing around in pockets and cup holders, the antenna coupling gets weak or the chip gives out entirely.
Cut a fresh B99 blank on the van, programmed a new PK3 transponder through the diagnostic port so the BCM accepted it as a factory key. The old key got erased from the system. Whole thing took about 35 minutes, including the GM security timer countdown that you cannot skip.
He looked at the dash when it started like he expected the SECURITY message to come right back. It did not. He drove off and I packed up the van.
