Saturday afternoon on Upper State Street corridor in Santa Barbara, a Panamera owner flagged me down from a polo event parking area. He had one working key and a second fob that had been dead for months. He assumed the spare was toast.
I popped the spare open on the hood. The CR2032 was corroded around one edge, and the tiny battery contact clip had a slight warp, just enough to lose connection. Cleaned the terminals, seated a fresh CR2032, and the buttons came back to life. But the car wouldn't start with it. The KESSY module had dropped it from memory.
So I connected through the OBD port, read the KESSY, and re-registered the second fob alongside the original. The 971 platform uses a Hitag Pro transponder with a rolling encryption handshake, so you can't just hold two buttons and magically pair it. The car has to accept the key through the diagnostic side.
Then the part that matters. I walked both fobs out across the lot, tested lock, unlock, trunk release, panic, and the frunk button. Walked back. Keyless-Go start with each fob individually. Three clean starts per key, six total. Checked that the door handle capacitive sensors recognized each fob for passive entry on both sides.
He stood there watching me walk back and forth pressing buttons and said the dealer never tested like that. They just hand you the key and wave you out.
He kept both fobs working and spent a fraction of what the dealer quoted him.
