A guy in the East End neighborhood of Ojai called me on a Tuesday morning. He had his 2025 Corolla Cross in the driveway, coffee going, ready to head out, and the car would not acknowledge the fob.
Door handles were dead to the touch. He tried walking back up to the car from a distance, tried holding the fob to the start button, tried the works. Key-not-detected warning on the dash. No movement.
He had replaced the CR2450 himself the week before. I asked him to describe how he opened the fob. He had used a flathead at the seam and pried. That is almost always the story.
When I got there and opened the fob carefully, the battery contact on the positive side had a small upward bow in it. The CR2450 was sitting in there and making just enough contact to power the fob in his hand, but not enough to hold a stable signal at range. The vehicle was seeing an intermittent, weak transmission and dropping it entirely rather than giving a partial response.
I seated the contact back down, verified the CR2450 was snug, and closed the fob correctly. Then I walked every function: touch unlock on both front handles, lock, start button response, and each of the four buttons. Everything came back solid.
He said he had already called a dealer and they told him to come in for a full diagnostic appointment, which was going to run into a multi-day wait. He saved a good chunk and never had to leave his street. Sometimes the fix is ten minutes and a correctly seated battery.
