1999 Cadillac Escalade
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do I need to tow my Cadillac to the dealer for a replacement key?

Not if you call us first. Dealers will tell you to bring the vehicle in, which means a tow bill before they even look at it. On the 1999 Escalade, a replacement key is cut to the vehicle using the lock or ignition cylinder - there is no reason that work has to happen at a dealership. We come to you in Alpine and handle everything on site.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership - your registration or title. We verify the VIN from the dashboard plate or door jamb sticker on your Escalade to confirm everything lines up. That's the same standard a dealer holds you to. Having the paperwork ready before we arrive keeps the job moving and gets you back on the road faster.

Q: My 1999 Escalade ignition is getting hard to turn and sometimes the key sticks. Is this a key problem or a cylinder problem?

Almost always the cylinder at this age. The ignition lock cylinders on late-1990s GM full-size trucks are well past the point where wear becomes a real factor. A key that used to turn easily and now binds, sticks on the way out, or occasionally feels like it won't go in all the way is usually telling you the cylinder has worn tumblers, not that the key is wrong. What happens over time is the wafers inside the cylinder wear unevenly.

Q: Can a locksmith make a key for a 1999 Escalade without the original?

Yes. When there's no original to copy, we decode the lock directly - reading the positions of each wafer in the door lock or ignition cylinder - and cut a key to match what's there. No original needed. It's one of the cleaner jobs on a vehicle this age because the mechanical key system is well-understood and the tools for decoding GM locks from this era are reliable.

1999 Cadillac Escalade Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in the Viejas Area, a guy called me about his 1999 Escalade. He'd had the same key for years and finally snapped it off in the door lock. Not in the ignition, just the door. He still had the broken bow in his hand and the blade was sitting inside the cylinder.

First thing was extracting the broken blade without chewing up the lock. Once that was out, I decoded the door lock wafer by wafer and cut a fresh key to match. Checked it in the door, smooth. Walked it over to the ignition and it turned clean on the first try, which on a 25-year-old the platform truck is genuinely good news - those cylinders wear independently sometimes.

The whole job was done at his driveway. He mentioned the dealer had told him to bring it in, which on a truck that had no working door key wasn't exactly helpful advice.

He saved a good chunk compared to what that trip would have cost him, and he didn't have to figure out how to get a locked truck across town to do it.

Yes. Call us and we come directly to wherever you are in Alpine or the Viejas Area. No tow truck, no waiting on hold with roadside assistance, no multi-day dealer turnaround.
