Over in the Seacoast neighborhood in Imperial Beach, a woman called me from a parking lot off Seacoast Drive. She had her 2020 Escalade sitting there, fob in hand, and the dash was showing a key-not-detected warning every time she got near the start button.
The truck was hers. The fob was the original. She'd owned it since new. Nothing had changed except that morning it decided it was done cooperating.
She'd already called the dealer. First available appointment was four days out. They told her the vehicle would need to stay overnight for programming. She had work. She had a kid in school pickup in three hours. Overnight wasn't an option.
I pulled up, popped the fob open on the hood of my van. CR2032 looked original. Three years of sitting in that fob, probably never replaced. Swapped it, reseated the battery contacts, and tested. The start button saw it immediately. Key-not-detected warning gone.
But I stayed a few more minutes and walked the full system with her watching. Touch unlock on both front handles, the passive lock function when she walked away, every button on the six-button fob. Everything was solid. The fob didn't need programming. It needed a battery.
She was back on Seacoast Drive headed to pickup well before the three-hour mark. The dealer appointment she'd booked was still sitting in her calendar. She cancelled it on the way.
That's not every call. Sometimes the fob itself is done, or the key needs to be enrolled fresh because the vehicle security system lost its pairing. But you don't start there. You start with the CR2032 and work outward.
