Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Cadillac vehicles?

A properly cut and programmed key should hold up as long as your original did. The transponder electronics do not degrade from normal use, and the registration does not expire or wear out in the immobilizer.

What does wear out is the physical key blade, especially if it lives on a heavy keychain or gets used hard. The blade cuts down over years of ignition use, and a worn blade is the most common reason a key that used to work fine starts causing intermittent no-start or ignition-bind issues. If the blade ever shows visible wear or the ignition starts feeling stiff, have a spare cut before you are stranded rather than after.

What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call us. We stand behind the work. If the key loses function, fails to start the vehicle, or develops any issue tied to what we did, we come back and sort it out.

That warranty matters more than it sounds. A key bought online and self-installed, or programmed by someone who does not back their work, leaves you with no recourse when something goes sideways. We test the key on site before we leave, which catches most issues immediately. But if something comes up later, you have a name, a number, and a guarantee.

I have one working key for my 2012 Escalade. Should I get a spare made now or wait until I need it?

Get the spare made now. This comes up constantly with Escalade owners on forums and the answer is always the same in hindsight.

If you have a working key, adding a second one is a shorter, simpler job. The immobilizer already has a registered key to reference and the process is faster. If that one key dies or gets lost before you have a spare, you are in all-keys-lost territory, which means the full wipe-and-relearn process, more time, and more cost. Full-size Escalades are also a higher theft-target vehicle, and some owners have had keys damaged or go missing in circumstances beyond normal wear. One spare is cheap insurance against a much bigger headache.

My 2012 Escalade starts and then immediately stalls. Could this be an immobilizer problem?

Yes, and it is one of the first things to check. A start-then-immediate-stall, especially when the engine catches for just a second or two before dying, is a classic sign the immobilizer did not complete its handshake with the transponder chip in the key. The engine control module briefly allows the start, then shuts fuel delivery down when the security check does not clear.

This can happen with a key whose chip has failed, a key that has lost its registration due to a battery event or module reset, or a worn blade that is not seating properly in the ignition cylinder. A key-not-detected type warning on the dash sometimes accompanies this, but not always. The engine stall alone is enough to point toward the security system. We diagnose and handle this on site.
