2017 Cadillac Escalade
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How fast can you get to Moonlight Beach or the surrounding Encinitas area?

I give you a real arrival window when you call -- not a four-hour range. Being mobile and already on the road in the area means I'm usually faster than waiting for roadside assistance to sort out dispatch. Cadillac's roadside program runs through third-party contractors, and the forums are full of owners who burned an hour or more just trying to get someone on the phone, only to have the dispatch fall through entirely.

Q: Can I get a replacement key made today, same day?

In most cases, yes. I carry the fob housings, cutting equipment, and programming tools for the 2017 Escalade in my service van. If the schedule allows and I have your key in stock, I can be at your location and have a new smart key cut, programmed, and tested the same day.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2017 Escalade. Can I program it myself or do I need a tech?

You need a tech with the right equipment. The smart key system on this generation does not have a DIY onboard programming sequence -- there's no ignition-turn trick or button combination that works for proximity fobs. The fob has to be registered to the vehicle through a diagnostic tool connected to the OBD port. That said, buying the fob blank online isn't a bad move.

Q: One door handle on my Escalade stopped detecting the fob. The others work fine. Is the key going bad?

Almost certainly not the fob. If the other handles are waking up normally and the vehicle starts, the key is doing its job. Passive entry on this generation uses individual antenna modules at each door, and a single door going unresponsive points to the handle sensor, the antenna, or the wiring at that specific door -- not the fob itself. Clean the handle area and retest.

2017 Cadillac Escalade Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Over near Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, a dentist flagged me down -- not literally, but close enough. He'd messaged between patients, no window longer than ten minutes, with a cracked smart key fob that was holding on by goodwill alone. The emergency blade inside had stress fractures at the base. He'd been babying it for two weeks.

His front desk had already called the Cadillac dealer. The answer was: schedule a drop-off, probably a day or two out, and arrange your own transportation. He couldn't leave the practice with a waiting room full of patients, and he definitely wasn't paying for a flatbed on top of everything else.

I got to his office parking garage during a gap in his patient schedule. He handed me the broken fob and went back inside. I decoded the lock, cut a fresh key blade, transferred everything over to the new housing, and programmed the replacement through the OBD port. By the time he had a fifteen-minute break, both keys were tested and sitting on his dashboard.

He never moved the car. Never missed a patient. The dealer quote had been well over what he paid me, and that was before adding a tow.

The part that stuck with me was after -- he just picked up the keys, said "that's it?" and walked back in. Sometimes the job is supposed to be that undramatic.

Cadillac Escalade Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does a 2017 Cadillac Escalade key replacement take?▼

Plan on 30 to 45 minutes once I'm at the vehicle. The smart key system on this generation requires going through the OBD port to register a new fob, and there's a theft deterrent timing cycle built into that process -- you can't rush it. Cutting the emergency blade and testing every button, handle sensor, and the start function adds a few minutes on top.
