2002 Cadillac Escalade
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do I need to tow my Escalade to the dealer for a replacement key?

Not if you call me. Dealers will often tell you to tow it in, especially with no working key in hand. On a truck this age, the dealer still needs to pull the key code from their system or decode the lock, cut the blade, and hand it to you.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, either your registration or your title. I also verify the VIN from the dash plate or door jamb sticker on the Escalade before any key gets cut. That is standard practice whether you go through a locksmith or a dealer. Having your paperwork ready when you call just speeds things up.

Q: My 2002 Escalade key turns but the truck won't start. Is this a key problem?

On a mechanical key vehicle like the 2002 Escalade, the key itself either turns the ignition or it doesn't. If the key turns freely and the engine still won't crank or fire, the key has done its job mechanically and the issue is somewhere else in the starting or electrical system. A worn ignition switch is a known weak point on trucks this age, separate from the key cut itself.

Q: Can a replacement key be made from the VIN if I have zero keys?

Yes. The key code for the 2002 Escalade can be retrieved through the VIN using locksmith databases, or the lock cylinders can be decoded directly at the vehicle. Either way, a working key gets cut without needing an original. You just need to show ownership documentation before that process starts.

2002 Cadillac Escalade Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy out in Otay Mesa West called me on a weekday morning. He had a 2002 Escalade sitting in his driveway, no working key. Said he had lost his only copy somewhere over the weekend and needed to get moving.

He had already called the dealer. They told him to tow it in, said they would need to look up the key code and get back to him. No solid timeline, no price, just "bring it in and we'll see." He was not thrilled about that answer.

I came out to him. The VIN was right there on the dash plate. I decoded the key from the vehicle information, cut the blade in my van, and had him testing it in the door cylinder and ignition within a reasonable window. The truck started. He turned it off and started it again just to make sure.

That was it. No tow. No waiting around at a service counter. No being told "we'll call you." He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer route was shaping up to be, and he never had to leave his driveway.
