1996 Chevrolet Astro
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will a replacement key last on a van this age?

Honestly, longer than the locks might. A properly cut metal key on a 1996 Astro can last years of daily use. The weak point at this mileage and age is usually the lock cylinder, not the key. Worn wafers, corroded tumblers, or a sticky ignition cylinder can chew through a new key faster than it should. If the key feels stiff or you're forcing it to turn, the cylinder needs attention.

Q: What if the replacement key has issues after a few weeks?

Call me and I come back. Every key we make is covered. If it binds, sticks, or stops working under normal use, we make it right. I test every key in every lock on the vehicle before I close out the job. If something comes up later that's tied to our work, that's on us to fix.

Q: My 1996 Astro starts but dies immediately after cranking. Will a new key fix that?

Probably not by itself. A start-then-stall on a vehicle this age can point to a fuel delivery issue, but it can also point to an anti-theft component in the system that isn't seeing what it expects. Some mid-90s GM vans carried security features that aren't obvious from the outside, and a worn or damaged key can be part of that picture. I diagnose the cause on site before cutting anything.

Q: Can I just copy my Astro key at a hardware store?

You can try, but hardware store key machines are hit or miss on older GM van keys. The blank selection is often limited, and the cuts can be slightly shallow or off-center, which works once or twice and then starts hanging up in worn lock cylinders. For a van you depend on, a properly cut key from professional equipment is worth the difference.

1996 Chevrolet Astro Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy in Old Town National City on a Wednesday morning. His 1996 Astro was sitting in the driveway and his only key had snapped off inside the door lock. Not the ignition, just the door. He'd been getting in through the passenger side for two weeks.

He figured the dealer could handle it. They told him to have the van towed in, and they'd look at availability for parts. He didn't want to tow a running vehicle across town and wait days for a metal key.

I came out to him. I extracted what was left of the broken blade from the door lock, decoded the cut from the lock cylinder itself, and cut a new key on the spot. Tested it in the door, tested it in the ignition. Turned clean both ways.

The whole thing took about thirty minutes in his driveway. He didn't move the van, didn't schedule anything, didn't lose a day. The dealer route would have been slower and cost him a tow on top of it.

Chevrolet Astro Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on a 1996 Chevrolet Astro?▼

For a mechanical key like this one, the blade material and the cut accuracy matter more than the brand on the blank. We use quality key blanks that match the correct profile for the Astro's lock cylinders. A cheap blank from a gas station key kiosk can be slightly off in thickness or tip shape, which causes binding or premature wear on already-tired lock wafers.
