1999 Chevrolet Astro
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How much more does replacing a key when I have none cost versus making a spare while I still have one?

On a mechanical key van like the Astro, all-keys-lost is still more work than cutting a spare from an existing key. With a working key in hand, I can duplicate it in minutes. With no key at all, I either pull the key code by VIN or decode the lock directly, which takes longer and requires more tools and steps on-site. There is no security relearn, no timed cycle, none of that.

Q: Can I use an aftermarket key blank on a 1999 Chevrolet Astro?

Yes. Since this is a straight mechanical key, the only thing that matters is the correct blank profile for this ignition and door cylinder, and that the cut is accurate. I source blanks from professional suppliers, not the random online listings that come in loose tolerances. A sloppy blank that is even a few thousandths off can feel fine going in and still wear your cylinder faster than a properly spec'd cut.

Q: My ignition is sticky and the key is hard to turn. Is that a key problem or a cylinder problem on these old Astro vans?

Both, sometimes. On a van this age, the ignition wafers wear down over decades of use, and a key that has also worn can start to feel like it is catching or dragging. If you are using a copied key that was cut from another copy rather than from the original, the cumulative error in the cut can make it worse.

Q: Can a locksmith make a key for my Astro if I have no key and do not know the key code?

Yes. I can decode the lock directly on-site. I read the wafer positions inside the cylinder and derive the cut depths without needing the original key or a code on file. On a 1999 Astro, the lock profile is well documented and the cylinder is accessible. VIN-based key code lookup is also an option if the records are available, but even without them, the decode route works. No tow, no dealer, no waiting on a parts order.

1999 Chevrolet Astro Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Old Poway, a guy waved me down after calling me from the roadside. His 1999 Chevrolet Astro was sitting on the shoulder, and he had half a key in his hand and the other half stuck somewhere inside the ignition cylinder.

He had already called another locksmith. That locksmith told him the cylinder would need to be drilled out and replaced. New cylinder, new keys, the whole thing. The number he got quoted made him stop and look for a second opinion.

I pulled up, took a look, and extracted the broken fragment without disturbing the wafer stack inside. Clean extraction is the whole game on these. Once the cylinder was clear, I decoded it by reading each wafer position for the cut depths, then cut a replacement blade from that decode on-site.

His original cylinder works fine. His new key works exactly like the old one did. No drilling, no replacement hardware, no tow to a shop.

He mentioned the other locksmith's quote on the way out. I just told him I was glad he called back before anything got drilled.

Chevrolet Astro Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace my 1999 Chevrolet Astro key?▼

Call a mobile locksmith first. The 1999 Astro takes a mechanical key, so there is no programming involved, no fob, no extra charges layered on top of the blade itself. A dealer will still want you to tow in, wait for a VIN lookup, and pay shop rates for something that takes a fraction of that time in your driveway.
