Out in Bressi Ranch, I got a call from a guy who had been driving his 2002 Astro as a work van for years. One key, the original, and he had been meaning to get a spare cut since roughly the Bush administration. Then the blade snapped off in the door lock. Clean break, right at the shoulder. Half the key was inside the cylinder and the other half was in his hand.
He found me through a neighbor and called from the parking lot of one of the business parks off Palomar Airport Road. I was already in Carlsbad that morning.
First thing was extracting the broken blade from the door lock. That part takes patience more than anything else. Once it was out I decoded the cylinder, confirmed the cut, and had two new keys made on site. He watched the whole thing from maybe three feet away, which I like. Nothing to hide on a job this clean.
He kept saying he thought it was going to be a whole ordeal. It was not. Two keys, both tested in the door and the ignition, done in under thirty minutes. He said the dealer told him to bring it in and leave it for the day. For a key cut on a 2002 van.
