I was parked on a side street off Shadowridge Drive on a Tuesday evening, working under the cargo lights in the back of my van, when the call came in. A guy had been sitting in the hotel parking lot for about forty minutes. His 2000 Astro remote had stopped responding to anything. Door locks, trunk release, nothing. He had the key, so he could get in and drive, but he was convinced the fob was gone for good and wanted a replacement programmed before he had to deal with it again.
When I pulled up, the first thing I did was ask to see the existing fob. He handed it over and it rattled. That is never a good sign. The back panel had a small crack along the seam, probably from being dropped, and the battery was seated slightly off angle. The contact clip on the positive side had a tiny bend pulling it away from the battery surface.
I straightened the clip, seated a fresh CR2032, snapped the case back together, and ran through the onboard programming sequence right there in the lot. These older GM vans have a built-in add-a-key process that does not require plugging into anything. You cycle the door locks a specific way with the existing key in the ignition and the module puts itself into a learning mode. The fob registered on the first attempt.
He tested every button, standing back about thirty feet, and it worked cleanly. Locks, unlock, the works.
He had already called the dealer. They told him to bring it in the next day. He would have spent most of his morning there. He paid way less going this route, and he was back inside the hotel in under an hour.
