2002 Chevrolet Avalanche
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How does mobile key replacement work for a 2002 Avalanche?

Call with your VIN and I'll confirm the right key blank and give you a price before I drive out. When I arrive, I either use the factory key code tied to your VIN or decode the cut directly from your lock. The blank gets cut on site, tried in the door lock and the ignition, and you get a working key before I leave. The whole job is usually quick. No equipment hookup, no timed relearn cycles.

Q: What do I need to have ready when you arrive?

Vehicle, valid photo ID, and proof of ownership such as your registration or title. Standard stuff for any locksmith job, and the same things the dealer would ask for. I'll pull the VIN from the dash plate or door jamb to match the key specs. If you have any existing keys, even broken ones, hand them over. A broken key with the bitting still visible can speed things up.

Q: My 2002 Avalanche key turns but feels loose or stiff. Do I need a new key or is the ignition going?

Worth sorting out before you order a replacement key, because a worn key on a worn ignition will cut a new key to the wrong depth if you're not careful. These trucks are old enough now that the ignition wafers can wear unevenly, especially if the same key has been in daily use for twenty-plus years. A key that feels sloppy might be worn down itself, or it might be the cylinder wearing to fit a key that's already off-spec.

Q: I have a spare key for my 2002 Avalanche but it only works the door, not the ignition. What's going on?

Common situation on trucks this age. GM used separate key codes for the door locks and the ignition on some of these, so a spare cut to the door lock bitting won't necessarily turn the ignition, and vice versa. If someone had a spare made years ago from just one lock, that's probably what happened. I can decode both cylinders and cut keys that work the whole truck.

2002 Chevrolet Avalanche Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was out in the Richland neighborhood of San Marcos on a Tuesday afternoon for what looked like a simple call. Guy had a 2002 Avalanche, used it for hauling, and his only key had snapped off at the bow. Not in the ignition, at least. Just broke clean where the blade meets the head, probably from years of a heavy keychain pulling sideways every time he hit a bump.

He had the broken pieces in his hand when I pulled up. He figured he needed to go to the dealer and have them look up his records and order a key blank. That's not how it works, but it's what he'd been told.

I pulled the bitting off the remaining blade fragment and verified the cut against the lock. Had a matching blank in the van, cut it on the spot, tried it in the door and then the ignition. Smooth both ways.

He asked what the programming step would cost. I told him there wasn't one. For a 2002 with a standard metal key, the cut is the whole job. He looked at me like I was leaving money on the table.

I wasn't. That's just what this vehicle takes.

Chevrolet Avalanche Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I need to bring my 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche somewhere for key replacement?▼

No. I come to wherever the truck is. Driveway, job site, parking lot in the Richland area of San Marcos, it doesn't matter. I bring the key blanks and the cutting equipment in the van. For a 2002 Avalanche with a standard metal key, there's nothing that ties you to a service bay. Dealers will sometimes tell owners to bring the vehicle in so they can look up the key code from the VIN.
